If Not Now, When? Awakening to Anti-Bias Education in Action

Annual day of learning and connection. This year’s focus is a dive into play. We will explore the many facets of learning through play. As we move through pandemic times, the timing feels right to revisit this foundational element of early childhood education.

Conference Theme and Keynote Speaker: This year’s conference will be focused on the foundational topic of Play! We are thrilled to announce the keynote speaker will be Ben Mardell, from Project Zero whose work is focused on the Pedagogy and Play and playful learning.

2022 Annual Conference
Our previous conference, titled “If Not Now, When? Awakening to Anti-Bias Education in Action,” was held virtually on January 3, 2022.
Anti-Bias Education (ABE) is a way to teach that supports children’s ability to actively resist prejudice, discrimination, and bias against all types of diversity.
Educators intentionally support children to:
- Develop a positive sense of identity in a diverse society
- Respect a range of human differences
- Recognize unfairness and the feelings it causes
- Speak up for the rights of others
This day of learning aims to:
- Inspire ongoing journeys as Anti-Bias Educators
- Support new insights into what ABE can look like in action
- Awaken a desire to engage in ongoing reflection and learning on the topic
WHY NOW? WHY US?
Rabbi Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, who am I? If not now, when?” – Pirkei Avot 1:14
This is the 2nd year of our community focus on ABE. As ECE educators, we hope to lay a foundation for a more just and equitable society and support young children
to become contributing citizens to that vision.
This year’s focus is on what Anti-Bias Education can look like IN ACTION.
This is complex work, and Rabbi Hillel’s teaching reminds us of our responsibility to all four goals of Anti-Bias Education:
Identity • Diversity • Justice • Activism
